Dear friend of OTG,

Here at Opera to Go, our goal is to be more an integral part of the Juneau arts community, and we’re beginning a new endeavor to do just that. We will help other arts groups in town to present performances with a helpful hand, financial support and our extensive arts experience. We will be keeping our 18 year-long commitment to opera and the vocal arts, but expanding that idea to help foster other art forms in our exciting community.
We are again working with Theater at Latitude 58 on their two shows this fall – How Things Happen in Three in late October and Calamity Jane in November, expanding the tradition started last season with our Seussical production that was so wildly popular. A new and exciting holiday offering is starting to take shape as well with Northern Lights Junior Theater with The Christmas Doll in November. All three of these productions are comprised mainly of local children and young adults, and we have been happy to be in the thick of three simultaneous rehearsals processes!
The main production of this season breaks new ground for us artistically, and also brings together elements of music and theater that we have been exploring in recent years. Leos Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen is an opera based on a serialized novella from the early 20th century. The story’s vixen is a layered personality, who we see growing up before our eyes, with a sense of adventure, justice, fun, and family with which we can easily relate.  An unusually large cast brings the piece to life, with characters ranging from fox cubs to a frog to a poacher. The piece unfolds with lots of assistance from a troupe of dancers from Juneau Dance Theater (formally JDU) who populate the world with animals of all sizes, adding color and charm to the dramatic unfolding of the plot. OTG is crafting a customized score for the instrumental side of this vivid piece. The normally large orchestra (too big for either of our orchestra pits) is being totally reworked to be performed by a chamber ensemble of 8 players, each with a virtuoso role. The opera will be sung in Czech (a first for Juneau, and perhaps Alaska as well!) with simultaneous projected translation, so you will not miss any of what is going on, while hearing the vocal lines as the composer intended – he wrote the vocal lines to mimic the speech patterns and lilt of the Czech language – a performance in English is just not doing the piece justice – and with our supertitles translating all the words, you won’t have to worry about missing a thing!
Also this season we will present our annual Wharf Unplugged event for local singer/songwriters and Opera Spotlight. The Juneau Wind Ensemble and the Marching Band will be making appearances this summer with our help as well. Look for the Amalga Chamber Orchestra to perform in Juneau and Sitka later this season with Juneau Lyric Opera’s Don Giovanni! This is going to be a very busy season!
Please consider supporting OTG this season as we make this bold transition to continue our mission and also help other local groups accomplish theirs, in a time when funding is scarce and arts in our community are so very essential to our quality of life. For example, a $50 donation can buy an hour of rehearsal time on stage,  $75 supplies us with an average costume, or $200 will print most of our posters for one event. Financial contributions are most needed, but we also appreciate volunteers! Details for credit card or from your bank account (through PayPal) are available on our website. Or you can mail an old-fashioned check to our snail mail address:
